I don't get it.
Anywhere you put a tournament is going to be primarily local to that region. You may get more local players if you go to a larger area, but it will always be non-local for the vast majority of people.
They're located in the 16th largest metropolitan area in the US (according to the 2010 census). There is a major aiport that services the area. There is a major interstate that goes right past their headquarters.
While there are definitely places that would allow a larger population to be within a few hours of driving distance, you'll still get people not in those areas complaining that it should be moved. The Twin Cities are not the bare wasteland people are making them out to be. There are locations that could be better, but Minnesota seems like a great place to me, with a strong gaming community.
As for regional tournaments, if the game stays as strong as I hope it will in future years when it has been out long enough for such tournaments to be realistic, I imagine we'll see them.
